Spells for 3rd Edition Definition

Postby Nighteagle » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:23 pm

I have a question about how to use the spell entries in the 3rd Edition Definition file (I finally gave up on the 3.5 with all the wacky scripts...). Anyhow, in the Spells section, there is a column entitled "App Effect". My understanding from reading "How to Klooge" was that if I entered a global effect name in this box, that the spell should then apply the effect to the target. But, alas, it hasn't worked. I created the global effect "Mage Armor", giving the temporary AC bonus of +4, and then tried entering the name "Mage Armor" in the "App Effect" column for the spell named "Mage Armor". However, Klooge does not apply the effect and gives me the text "No adjustments made". I've also tried putting {#Mage Armor} in the "Expression" column for the spell, and this has worked. Is the column not working correctly (as I had interpreted), or am I doing something wrong?

Ok, I was doing something wrong, I was forgetting to make sure the character was targeting himself before casting the spell. And now entering the effect name in the column "App Effect" is working correctly. But, since I'm typing anyhow, what version of Klooge was the document "How to Klooge" written for, and how much of it is still valid in the current version of Klooge? I'm especially interested in learning about what expressions Klooge will recognize, but the "How to Klooge" reference is the only one I've found with that info in it, and it doesn't seem to all be applicable to the current edition of Klooge.

P.S. To the gods of Klooge, Klooge needs a better user manual....;)

I think the How To Klooge user-generated manual was written for version 2.8.8 and the document was last updated on November 4, 2005. At least that is what is says on page 5 of the copy I have on my computer.

The Expressions section is still valid with minor updates you can find by reading the LATEST CHANGES.htm file in the kLoOge.Werks root directory. The KloogInfo videos were made for version 3.1, so they might be better to review from the perspective of general use of the program.

In the root directory of kLoOge.Werks is a manual that begins the explanation of the software's capabilities. Additional information is available on Definition File creation in the Definition-docs folder within the root. The kLoOge.Werks website also has numerous videos available for the latest capabilities and should be viewed.

If you provide a time you are available to view and discuss the 3.5E Definition File, I could help determine what spell shortfalls you are having. I cannot reproduce many of the troubles detailed earlier, so the root cause might be some installation or path troubles that can be resolved with a joint session.

I've had such goofy errors that I can't reproduce them either. I've just decided it would be easier for now to do more manually, because when the spell scripts fail, I have to do it manually anyhow. I'm getting pretty good at working with the definition file, but can't make too much sense out of scripting.

Thanks for the offer of help, but I'm going to stay away from 3.5 until I can figure out scripting (which may be awhile). I've looked at the code for the scripts, but since I don't know squat about Java, I can't really understand the syntax. I've also watched the videos on the Klooge site and the Klooge info site, and I've read the manual in the root directory.

Otherwise, I've noted that some of my players have old/slow computers and their player connection is failing to refresh, so sometimes they have to log off and back on to clean up the screen. Usually towards the end of a gaming session several of my players start getting java socket exception errors and get kicked out of Klooge and have to log back on. It seems that the longer we play, the higher the chances of random errors are. At the end of my last game my players were somehow attacking and dealing damage to themselves, which we all got a good laugh out off, but I'm still not sure how/why it was happening.

By the way, the name of the effects only worked in the column "App Effect" for a temporary length of time, then suddenly stopped. I fixed it by entering {#effect name} in the "expression" column of the spell, as well as keeping the effect name in the "App Effect" column. Since I don't know why/how this worked, or even why it stopped/started working before, I'm just leaving it as is for now.

Nighteagle,

I am curious if the new update to Klooge fixed your players staying connected issues? I have an old player getting ready to return who had dropped out before because of the connection issues she was having on her machine.

Thanks,

BOB
